WooCommerce to Shopify Migration: Moving 14,000 Products Without Losing Rankings
WooCommerce migrations are the most technically complex projects we run. Here is the 47-step internal process we use to move catalogs, customer history, and search rankings — without losing a single position.
WooCommerce migrations are the most technically complex projects we run. The wrong approach loses rankings, breaks redirects, and corrupts customer history. The right approach moves your store cleanly and finishes ahead of schedule.
Step 1: Pre-migration crawl (week 1)
Before we touch a single product we run a full crawl of the WooCommerce site — every URL, every ranking position, every piece of structured data. This takes two to three days and is non-negotiable. Skipping this is how stores lose hard-earned organic traffic during a platform move.
What the crawl captures:
- Complete URL inventory (products, categories, blog, custom pages, attachments)
- Current keyword rankings for the top 1,000 traffic-driving queries
- Schema markup currently on each page
- Internal link graph (which pages link to which)
Step 2: Data migration in order
We migrate in a strict order: products first, customers second, orders third. Each step is verified before the next begins. Our preferred toolchain is Matrixify combined with custom scripts for data that does not map cleanly between platforms.
Step 3: Redirect map
The single most common reason migrations lose rankings is incomplete or incorrect 301 redirects. Our redirect map covers products, categories, blog posts, attachment pages, and any custom URL structures.
Step 4: Verification and launch
Before launch, we re-crawl the staged Shopify store, compare against the WooCommerce snapshot, and run a redirect audit. Only when redirect coverage is 100% and structured data is intact do we cut over DNS.
