The Shopify theme editor is one of the most powerful no-code interfaces in commerce. With it, you can redesign your store, swap content, reorder sections, and ship changes without touching code. Most store owners use 10 percent of its capabilities. Here is the complete guide.

Where to find it

Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes → click 'Customize' on your active theme. Opens the theme editor in a new tab.

The left sidebar shows the page structure. The right preview shows your store. Top tabs let you switch between page templates (Home, Product, Collection, etc.).

Sections — the building blocks

Every page is built from sections. Each section is a self-contained unit (hero, featured products, testimonials, FAQ).

Add a section: click 'Add section' under the section list. Pick from available sections.

Reorder sections: drag and drop in the sidebar.

Hide/show sections: click the eye icon next to the section name. Hidden sections are kept in the JSON template but not rendered.

Duplicate sections: right-click a section → Duplicate. Useful when you want two of the same type with different content.

Blocks within sections

Some sections support blocks (testimonials section has individual review blocks, hero with multiple CTA blocks).

Add a block: click on the section, then 'Add block' inside the section's settings.

Reorder blocks: drag within the section's block list.

Maximum blocks: each section type has a max (typically 6 to 16) defined in the section's schema.

Section settings

Click any section to open its settings panel on the right. Color schemes, padding, content, image pickers, link pickers — depends on what the section's schema exposes.

Theme-wide settings: click the gear icon in the top-left of the editor. Brand colors, fonts, logo, favicon, social links, checkout customization. These propagate across the entire theme.

Mobile preview

Click the mobile icon in the top toolbar to switch to mobile view. ALWAYS preview your changes on mobile before saving — 70 percent of D2C traffic is mobile.

Common issue: text that fits on desktop wraps awkwardly on mobile. Sections often have separate mobile padding or layout settings.

Saving and publishing

'Save' button in the top-right saves your changes to the theme. They go live immediately if you are editing the published theme.

Best practice: duplicate the theme before major changes. Edit the duplicate. Test thoroughly. Then publish the duplicate as the new live theme.

Theme history: under Online Store → Themes → Library, Shopify keeps the last 20 versions. You can roll back if a change breaks something.

What you cannot do in the theme editor

Change page structure beyond what the section schemas allow. If a section has 6 settings, you can edit those 6; you cannot add a 7th without code changes.

Add custom JavaScript or CSS beyond what the theme exposes. For that, you need to edit theme files (Online Store → Themes → Edit code) or create a custom theme.
