Shopify Multi-Currency: When to Use Markets vs Multiple Stores
Shopify Markets vs multiple stores for multi-currency in 2026. Pricing strategy, customer experience, and which structure works for global D2C.
If you sell internationally on Shopify, the multi-currency question has changed in 2026. Shopify Markets has matured to handle most cases that previously required multiple stores. Here is the decision framework.
Shopify Markets is the default answer in 2026
For 90 percent of brands going global, Shopify Markets on Basic/Advanced/Plus is the right structure. Single store, multiple markets, automatic currency conversion, country-specific pricing if needed.
Customer experience: visitor lands, Shopify auto-detects country, switches currency and language. One inventory, one product catalog, one operational team.
When multiple stores still make sense
Different brand identity per region. If your UAE brand is positioned differently from your India brand (different name, different tagline, different products), separate Shopify stores are correct.
Different product catalog per region. If only 30 percent of products overlap across regions, separate stores reduce complexity.
Different operational teams with different inventory. Multi-warehouse with no shared inventory often works better as separate stores.
Tax complexity beyond what Markets handles. Some niche tax scenarios (e.g., Russia, certain LATAM countries) work better with separate stores.
Multi-store cost
Each Shopify store is a separate subscription. Two stores = 2x subscription cost. Three stores = 3x.
Shopify Plus includes up to 9 expansion stores in one subscription. If you are at 4+ countries with separate stores, Plus economics work out.
Multi-currency pricing strategies
1. Auto-converted from base currency. Cleanest, but conversion rates fluctuate so prices change daily — bad for psychology.
2. Auto-converted with rounding rules. Rounding to round numbers smooths the FX fluctuation.
3. Manual prices per market. Best control, most maintenance. Use a price list per market.
Recommendation: start with auto-conversion + rounding. Move to manual pricing for hot markets where you want to optimize.
Common multi-currency setup mistakes
Not configuring rounding rules. Customers see prices like Rs. 1,247.83. Round to Rs. 1,250.
Forgetting market-specific shipping rates. Shipping needs to be configured per market.
Skipping market-specific email templates. Currency in email confirmations defaults to base; customers see USD when they paid in INR.
Wrong domain strategy. Subfolders (/in/, /ae/) consolidate SEO; subdomains (in.brand.com) split it.
