Indian D2C brands going global have three options: open separate Shopify stores per country, use Shopify Markets, or run a single Shopify Plus instance with international features. For most brands, Shopify Markets is now the right answer in 2026. Here is the setup.

What Shopify Markets does

Shopify Markets lets one Shopify store sell to multiple countries, each with its own currency, language, pricing, and tax behavior. Available on Basic plan and up.

Out of the box, Markets handles: automatic currency conversion (with rounding rules), automatic language switching based on browser locale, country-specific pricing, country-specific shipping zones, country-specific tax (VAT for EU, GST for India, sales tax for US, GCC for UAE).

Setup: from one country to multiple

Settings → Markets. Click 'Add market'. Pick the country. Configure currency, language, pricing strategy.

Pricing strategy options: 1) Same as base price (auto-converted by current FX), 2) Adjusted by percentage (e.g., 10 percent markup for EU), 3) Manual prices per market (best control, most maintenance).

For brands going global, start with auto-conversion. Add manual pricing later for hot markets where you want to optimize.

Multi-language: which languages and how

Pick languages your buyers actually speak: English (universal), Arabic (UAE/Saudi/GCC), Hindi (Tier 2/3 India if relevant).

Translate via Shopify's Translate & Adapt app, Weglot, or Langify. Translate & Adapt is now native and free; pick it unless you have reasons not to.

Translate: theme strings, product titles, descriptions, collections, navigation, blog. Skip: legal pages (use country-specific separate pages instead).

Tax behavior per country

India (origin): GST as configured. CGST+SGST intra-state, IGST inter-state.

USA: sales tax via Shopify's automatic tax calculation. Includes nexus tracking.

UAE: 5 percent VAT. Shopify supports VAT-inclusive pricing.

EU: VAT per country (EU OSS), Shopify handles automatically.

UK: 20 percent VAT post-Brexit, separate from EU OSS.

Domain strategy

Country-specific subdomains (in.thriftizer.com, ae.thriftizer.com) versus subfolders (thriftizer.com/in, thriftizer.com/ae) versus separate TLDs (thriftizer.in, thriftizer.ae).

Subfolders are best for SEO consolidation. Subdomains and separate TLDs split SEO authority across domains.

Shopify Markets supports all three. Pick subfolders unless you have hard reasons not to.

Common international launch mistakes

Launching all countries at once. Pick one secondary market, optimize, then add the next. Five-country launches almost always end with five neglected stores.

Forgetting payment methods. UAE buyers want Tabby and Tamara installments. EU buyers want Klarna. US buyers want Apple Pay. Configure per-market in Shopify Payments or via local gateway integrations.

Skipping legal pages per country. Each country has different consumer protection laws. Privacy policy, refund policy, terms — these need country-specific versions.
