Shopify Email Flows That Actually Generate Revenue
The Shopify email flows that actually generate revenue — welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, browse, win-back. Detailed timing, copy, and benchmarks.
Five email flows can generate 15 to 25 percent of monthly revenue for a typical Shopify D2C store. Most stores have these flows but configured wrong — wrong timing, wrong copy, wrong incentive. Here is what each flow should actually look like.
Welcome series — 3 emails
Trigger: subscriber joins via popup, footer signup, or checkout opt-in.
Email 1 (immediate): deliver the discount code from the popup. Set expectations. Single CTA: shop the catalog.
Email 2 (Day 2): brand story. Why does this brand exist. Founder photo and a paragraph. No discount, no CTA pressure — just establishing trust.
Email 3 (Day 4): social proof. 3 to 5 product reviews. Bestsellers carousel. Final reminder of the welcome discount.
Conversion expectation: 8 to 12 percent of subscribers purchase within 7 days.
Abandoned cart — 3 emails
Trigger: visitor adds to cart but does not complete checkout. Also fires on abandoned checkout.
Email 1 (1 hour): soft reminder. Image of the cart contents. CTA back to checkout. No discount.
Email 2 (24 hours): social proof. Reviews of the abandoned product. Address common objections (sizing, shipping, returns).
Email 3 (72 hours): incentive. Free shipping or 5 to 10 percent off, with a 24-hour countdown.
Recovery rate: 8 to 14 percent of abandoned carts.
Post-purchase — 4 emails
Email 1 (immediate): order confirmation. Standard but customise the design.
Email 2 (when shipped): shipping notification. Tracking link. Anticipation builder.
Email 3 (Day 7 post-delivery): review request. Rich-format ask, with photo upload encouragement (often photo reviews get 2x replies).
Email 4 (Day 30): cross-sell or replenishment reminder based on product type. For consumables, a 'time to reorder' reminder. For non-consumables, complementary product recommendations.
Browse abandonment — 2 emails
Trigger: logged-in subscriber views a product 2+ times without adding to cart.
Email 1 (4 hours): reminder. Product image, price. CTA back to product.
Email 2 (24 hours): related products. 'You might also like...' carousel.
Win-back — 3 emails
Trigger: customer who has not purchased in 60 days.
Email 1: 'We miss you'. New arrivals since last purchase. Soft incentive (free shipping).
Email 2 (Day 70): bestsellers + 10 percent off.
Email 3 (Day 90): final push, 15 percent off, last chance language. After this, move to a quarterly newsletter cadence.
Common configuration mistakes
Sending all 3 abandoned cart emails to people who actually completed the purchase. Always exclude customers who have already paid.
Welcome series triggering twice for the same email. Add suppression rules.
Discount stacking: customers using welcome discount + abandoned cart discount + loyalty discount on one order. Set hierarchy: only one promotional discount per order.
