Shopify Conversions API: Why Your ROAS Is Underreported

Why Meta Conversions API matters for Shopify stores. iOS 14.5, ad-blocker, and pixel limitations explained, plus the exact CAPI setup for Shopify.

If you are running Meta Ads on a Shopify store and your reported ROAS looks worse than your actual store revenue suggests, you are almost certainly missing Conversions API (CAPI). Here is what CAPI does, why iOS and ad-blockers killed pixel-only tracking, and how to set up CAPI correctly.

What changed in 2021 (and got worse since)

iOS 14.5 introduced App Tracking Transparency. Roughly 75 percent of iOS users opted out of cross-site tracking. Browser-based pixel events from those users do not fire — which means Meta cannot attribute purchases that came from clicks on Meta ads.

Ad-blockers extend the problem to desktop. By 2026, around 30 percent of desktop users globally use some form of ad-blocker that strips Meta's pixel JavaScript before it loads.

Result: pixel-only tracking captures roughly 55 to 65 percent of actual conversions on a typical D2C Shopify store. Your ROAS is real; Meta just does not see it.

How CAPI fixes this

CAPI fires events server-to-server. Shopify sends the event directly to Meta's API from its servers — bypassing the user's browser, iOS restrictions, and ad-blockers entirely.

Combined with the pixel (which still works for users who allow tracking), CAPI gets attribution back to roughly 95 percent of actual conversions.

CAPI also enables higher-quality data: hashed customer email, phone, name. Meta can match this against its identity graph and attribute even more events correctly.

Setting up CAPI on Shopify

The cleanest way is via Shopify's native Meta Sales Channel app. Install it, connect your Meta Business Manager, and enable Conversions API in the channel settings.

Shopify auto-fires all standard events server-side: ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, Purchase. Event deduplication between pixel and CAPI is automatic — no double-counting.

Verify in Meta Events Manager → your pixel → Test events. You should see both 'browser' and 'server' events for the same action, marked as deduplicated.

What to expect after enabling CAPI

48 to 72 hours: Meta starts attributing more conversions. Reported ROAS jumps 30 to 45 percent for typical Indian D2C stores.

Two to four weeks: Meta optimization improves materially. Better attribution data means better algorithmic decisions about who to show your ads to.
