Shopify Apps Best Practice: Which to Install (and Which to Avoid)
Best practice for Shopify apps in 2026 — which apps actually drive revenue, which slow your store, and how to audit your installed apps.
The Shopify App Store has 8,000+ apps. Most stores install 15 to 30 apps and never audit which ones are actually working. Here is the framework for choosing apps that drive revenue and avoiding the ones that just slow your store down.
The 5 categories you actually need
1. Reviews (Judge.me, Loox, or Yotpo). Drive conversion lift. Necessary.
2. Email marketing (Klaviyo or Omnisend). Drive 15 to 25 percent of revenue. Necessary.
3. Loyalty and rewards (Smile.io, Yotpo Loyalty). Drive repeat purchase rate. Worth it above Rs. 5L monthly revenue.
4. Subscriptions (Recharge, Subify, Bold) — only if your category supports recurring purchase.
5. Upsell and cross-sell (Bold, Reconvert) — measurable revenue lift.
The categories that usually do not need an app
Pop-ups: Klaviyo and Omnisend both include pop-up tools. Do not install a separate pop-up app.
SMS: Klaviyo SMS, Omnisend SMS, or your loyalty app's built-in SMS often covers needs.
Live chat: Most stores get more value from a WhatsApp chat widget than a live chat app.
Currency converter: Shopify Markets handles this natively in 2026. No app needed.
Trust badges: hardcode them in your theme. App-injected badges add JavaScript overhead.
Apps that slow your store
Each app adds 50 to 200 KB of JavaScript on every page (or every page where it operates). Five apps = 250 KB to 1 MB of JS.
JavaScript directly hurts INP (Interaction to Next Paint). 1 MB of JS on a slow Indian network can mean 500ms+ added to INP.
Audit: Lighthouse → Performance tab → 'Reduce unused JavaScript'. Tells you which scripts are dead weight.
How to audit installed apps quarterly
1. List every installed app with monthly cost.
2. For each: am I actively using this in the last 30 days? If no, uninstall.
3. For each remaining: is the value delivered worth the JavaScript overhead? Sometimes 'yes' (Klaviyo) and sometimes 'no' (a 'recommended for you' app driving 0.5 percent of revenue).
4. Look for app overlaps. If you have two apps doing similar things, pick one.
5. After the audit, re-run Lighthouse. If PageSpeed improved by 10+ points, your app diet was worth it.
Apps that block native Shopify features
Some legacy apps block features that Shopify now handles natively. Examples:
Currency converter apps blocking Shopify Markets. Uninstall, use Markets.
Speed optimization apps that interfere with Shopify's own image optimization. Most are net-negative.
Email collection apps duplicating Klaviyo's pop-up.
Always check what Shopify itself does natively before installing an app for it.
