Meta Ads for Shopify: The Campaign Structure Behind 4× ROAS
Meta ads under-perform when conversion tracking is broken. Here is the campaign structure, CAPI setup, and creative formula we use across our managed accounts to consistently deliver 4× ROAS.
Most Shopify stores running Meta ads under-perform for one simple reason: conversion tracking is broken. Browser-based pixel events miss roughly 40% of conversions on mobile. Here is the system we use to fix tracking, then build a campaign structure that scales.
Step 1: Conversions API first
Before touching campaigns we install the Conversions API (CAPI) using server-side events. Most stores see a 30–45% jump in attributed conversions within 48 hours of CAPI being live, with no actual change in performance — they were always there, Meta just could not see them.
Step 2: A 3-layer funnel structure
We split spend across three layers:
- Cold (60% of budget) — broad targeting, video creative, optimized for Add to Cart on day 1, switching to Purchase once we have 50+ events
- Warm (25%) — engagement audiences, page visitors, video viewers
- Retargeting (15%) — abandoned cart, product views, recent purchasers for cross-sell
Step 3: Creative cadence
Eight new video assets and twelve static creatives every month, organized in 3 ad sets per layer. We rotate creative weekly based on a fatigue threshold (CTR drop greater than 25% from week 1 baseline).
Step 4: Reading the data correctly
The instinct to pause an ad set after 3 days of bad numbers is the single biggest cause of poor account performance. We hold ad sets for at least the learning phase (50 conversions or 7 days, whichever comes first) before deciding.
