How to Migrate from Magento to Shopify Without Losing Rankings
Magento to Shopify migration without losing search rankings — 47-step process, redirect strategy, configurable products handling, and B2B preservation.
Magento to Shopify migration is the most technically complex move we run. Magento is more flexible than Shopify in some ways, which means there are more ways to break things during migration. Here is the playbook for moving without losing search rankings.
Pre-migration: full crawl and ranking baseline
Three days of audit before any data moves. Crawl every URL with Screaming Frog. Capture current Google rankings for the top 1,000 traffic-driving keywords. Snapshot structured data on every page.
Without this baseline, you cannot tell whether the migration cost you rankings or whether you simply did not measure correctly.
Configurable products: the biggest mapping challenge
Magento configurable products have a parent product with child variants — similar to Shopify but with subtle differences. Custom attributes do not map 1:1.
Strategy: map Magento custom attributes to Shopify metafields, then create variants on the parent. This preserves all data even if the original schema does not match.
Test variant pricing carefully — Magento configurables can have different prices per variant; Shopify supports this but configures it differently.
URL structure and redirect strategy
Magento default URLs include category slugs (/jackets/blue-denim-jacket). Shopify product URLs are flat (/products/blue-denim-jacket).
Build a 1:1 redirect map covering: every product, every category, every CMS page, every blog post, every attachment URL.
Implement redirects in Shopify under Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects, or via Matrixify bulk import for thousands of redirects.
B2B preservation
Magento B2B (customer groups, tier pricing, payment methods, ACL) needs to be remapped to Shopify B2B (Plus required for native equivalents).
Tier pricing in Magento → Price lists in Shopify B2B. Customer groups in Magento → Companies in Shopify B2B.
Order history
Migrate the last 2 years of order history minimum. Customers expect to see their past orders.
Shopify imports orders as 'closed' state with original totals, dates, line items, and customer linkage. They are read-only — you cannot fulfil them.
Post-migration verification
Re-crawl with Screaming Frog. Compare against the pre-migration baseline. Every URL must have a 200 (live), 301 (redirected), or be intentionally retired.
Submit new sitemap to Google Search Console. Monitor coverage report for 4 to 6 weeks for indexation issues.
